Taken from «The Complete Short Stories» this book includes five tales with commonplace situations transformed by comic or sinister events.
The title tale, «The Snobs», takes place in France at a Château -- what other setting for a story with such a title -- and already from the beginning of the story is the negative connotation of the word "snob" set up through a rather biased dictionary definition.
«The Fortune Teller», the third tale, are in many ways similar to the first one and, if read straight after the first, can be seen as a follow up as many of the ideas from the first tale are re-used.
In the second tale a more surreal approach is taken when the author explores another side of life. The tale, «The First Year of my Life», is written from an infants perspective and provides a rather unusual take on life.
The tales of the book are short and personal in the style of writing. The reader is often left with a smile as the author makes fun of the characters in the stories.
«The Snobs» by Muriel Spark is book number 36 out of 70
