Håkon Wium Lie, or Howcome, is to many known as a CSS guru and one of the people who played a great part in making CSS a world-wide standard on the internet. Recently he defended his PhD thesis at the University of Oslo. For those with special interest these things, the thesis can be found at Håkon's homepage [HTML] [PDF]
In essence this thesis is about how "web calls for different style sheet languages than does traditional electronic publishing". The abstract of the thesis clearly states where Wium is heading what the discussion is about.
The topic of this thesis is style sheet languages for structured documents on the web. Due to characteristics of the web – including a screen-centric publishing model, a multitude of output devices, uncertain delivery, strong user preferences, and the possibility for later binding between content and style – the hypothesis is that the web calls for different style sheet languages than does traditional electronic publishing.

One of the chapters I found the most interesting was Chapter 8: CSS for small screens, which addresses some of the problems with small screen devices such as mobile phones.
I haven't finished reading the whole thesis yet, only skimmed through it, but I'll come back with some more detailed information once I've read this small and rather easy-read pamphlet...
